Nothing Is Stopping You from Doing Something Good – Follow Me This Movember, as I Bring Back the Beard!
There are an infinite amount of excuses for not volunteering, not donating, not helping, and not being philanthropic. Before I lose you, let me make clear – I’m not one of those ‘goody-two-shoes’ self-proclaimed ‘pillar of the community’ types that get their rocks off by showcasing their ‘moral superiority’ by ‘voluntouring’ their way on down to the local house of the needy and slapping a picture of it on Facebook once a year.
I’m actually much worse than that because – as much as I despise that sort of grandstanding – unlike the person I just conjured in your mind, I haven’t done much of anything in the realm of philanthropy or community service in the last two years. It’s probably better to do good for the wrong reasons than to do nothing at all.
The lawyer equivalent of community service is working “pro-bono” which for all intents and purposes is Latin for ‘free.’ The trouble is, as far as I can tell, the areas of law that have the greatest need for true pro-bono work lie outside of my areas of expertise. This leaves me pondering what I can do to assist the legal community – a question I’ll need to wrestle with in the coming months and develop a plan around.
But I’m more than just a lawyer, so there’s nothing stopping me from doing some good old-fashioned fundraising for a just cause.
For the rest of this year, I’ll be hosting a fundraiser through Movember, an organization focused on spreading awareness and providing funding for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and suicide prevention.
My goal is to raise $2000. As part of my personal Movember challenge, I’ll be getting a head start on no-shave November and growing a beard throughout the rest of the 2023. I’ll also run 60 miles in the month of November for the 60 men lost to suicide each hour across the world. I’ll keep everyone updated on this journey through The Longhair Lawyer’s social media accounts.
I encourage anyone and everyone to donate or participate! Movember may be a men’s health-focused organization, but anyone is welcome to start their own fundraiser. Check out my personal “Mo” Space at the link below.
Like I said, I hate grandstanding, so please don’t give me more credit than is due. My last run at growing a big beard was 3 years ago (I’m overdue), plus the triathlon training I’m already doing will help me hit the 60-mile mark.
If there is something to take away from all this, it’s that there is probably already something in your life you can do to help someone somewhere. Something probably comes to mind. Just go for it!
